1. Does sports and hobby time figure in your regular schedule?

Maybe you've assessed your health and fitness, and everything seems to be in order except there is something missing.

You spend your waking hours on advancing your career or business, you workout, etc., etc., but there seems to be something else that you wish you were doing!

Well, most experts agree that career and personal health and well being are very important, however another key which seems to pop up quite frequently when we look at populations of people and how happy and healthy they are, is a hobby or pastime that you have a passion for.

One of the most positive hobbies that we have seen is that of sports. Some of us are avid sports watchers. We know every baseball, football, track athlete, etc and how they are doing, what teams are looking good, and so and so!

Some of us like to play and compete to win, while many of us enjoy the training and camaraderie that comes with being a part of a team or competition.

Regardless, anyone that has played a sport usually relates that they wouldn’t trade the memories and the friends that they have made for anything.

It is the highlight of many of our lives. So if you don’t have a sport to participate in why not try out a few new ones. There are almost always teams, clubs, etc that will welcome you and teach you about a new sport.

2. Sports and hobby: getting the most out of your sports instruction

In order to get the most out of your sports instruction you need to determine a few very important issues so that you know what you want and how you are going to achieve it!

First what is your goal/objective for seeking sports instruction?

  • Are you a weekend warrior and just want to see a bit of improvement in your game?

  • Are you trying out sports and hobby ideas and want to learn from an expert?

  • Are you an elite athlete wanting to compete at the state, national, or international level?

By answering this question it will help you define your direction so that you can know if you are successful (e.g. lowering your golf under 100 is a bit different from saying that you want to win the Masters!).

Next what is your commitment to this and how much time and resources are you willing to spend on it?

If you want to get better or learn new sports and hobby skills, etc. then it will take time, effort on your part and some time on financial commitment.

Are you willing to do this and can you match your goal with the commitment that you are able to make?

Know this - the main effort will be on your part!

All your instructor can do is offer the expertise and suggestions and you will have to implement them and spend the extra hours practicing until they are perfect. If you can’t make this commitment then you are not going to get the results that you desire.

Last and maybe most important is to be a good student. Keep an open mind, absorb all that you can, ask questions if you don’t understand something, and do your practice assignments.

Again, if you want to see improvement then you need to do the work!

The results can be highly rewarding! You might finally beat that cocky friend or associate for beers, or elevate yourself to the next level of performance e.g. state or national, or just learn a new sport that is very satisfying to participate in.
