- Vitamins are organic essential nutrients
They are required in very small amounts in order for the body to maintain itself and function at optimal levels. They work in conjunction with other foods, or substances in the body and assist with metabolism, and other body processes. There are approx. 13 vitamins that are essential to the human body.
- Minerals are pure inorganic elements and do not yield energy.
They are found in bones and teeth and in the fluids of the body (their presence actually influences the properties of those fluids) and their lack can contribute to various conditions such as osteoporosis (loss of bone density, calcium and mineral salts). Other minerals can be toxic if absorbed into the body. There are approximately 16 minerals known to be essential to the human body.
- Water is essential in that it is required for almost every process that takes place in the body, from transport, to metabolic functions. A key nutrition fact: most experts agree that the body requires about 6-8 cups per day.
