Is there really an antiaging skin care product that works?

So you’re looking for a miracle antiaging skin care product?

Trying to figure out where to start?

Well, let’s start with a quick background of how the skin ages.

The skin, as with our body as a whole, is constantly replacing cells. However as we age the skin begins to show wear because of:

  • Genetics

If you want young looking skin then choose your parents better! We’re half joking but there definitely is a genetic component to the aging process!

  • Environment

Sun exposure - it appears that too much exposure to the sun is a major factor (UV rays damage the elastin in your skin, making it less resilient).

  • Lifestyle choices

All of the following cause the skin to get dry, wrinkled or flaky:

    • Smoking,

    • Alcohol consumption,

    • Lack of sleep,

    • Stress,

    • Lack of proper hydration (internal and external),

    • Inadequate intake of antioxidants and balance of hormones,

    • Loss of subcutnaneous support (fatty tissue between your skin and muscle).

So, short of choosing your parents for young looking skin, you can do some or all of the following to meet your needs for an antiaging skin care product:

  • Limit your sun exposure or use sun-block

  • Limit or eliminate alcohol and tobacco consumption

  • Manage your stress

  • Get adequate sleep

  • Get proper hydration - drink approximately 8 glasses of water daily, and apply skin moisturizers (see below for more information)

  • Include antioxidants in your nutritional supplements

  • Check with your physician to be sure your hormones are balanced correctly - human growth hormone levels are under scrutiny as an anti aging weapon

  • Avoid toxic chemical exposure

  • Include in your skin treatment routine:

    • A skin rejuvenator with vitamin (retinal or retinyl palmitate)

    • An exfoliant such as alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA or glycolic acid) or beta hydroxyl acid (BHA). Be sure to follow directions as they can irritate your skin in higher concentrations

    • Products with anti oxidant protection i.e. vitamin c ester, spin trap, or CoQ10 are worth looking at.

    • Additional consideration might be given to DMAE, Kinerase, GHK Copper peptides.
So what about plastic (aesthetic) surgery as an "antiaging skin care product"?

It depends on many factors:

  • How bad do you want to look youthful?

  • Do you have the money?

  • Are you aware of the risks?

Years ago it was reserved for the wealthy. Because little was known about how we age or how to take care of the skin, it was almost a given that, if you had the money and wanted to look younger, you had a facelift.

Now the stigma attached to plastic surgery is minimized due to the US emphasis on sex and youth.

So although we don’t necessarily agree with rushing to the local aesthetic surgeon the minute you see a wrinkle, if you have exhausted all of the non-surgical treatments and it means a great deal to you to look more youthful for a few more years than it is definitely an option.

Just understand that like any surgery it has it’s risks. The results may not live up to your expectations, as well as complications from the surgery, or anesthetic.

So it can be considered as an antiaging skin care product - but it should definitely be discussed with a reputable surgeon before committing to it!
